The new Discovery Technologies & Molecular Pharmacology (DTMP) team is a critical part of the Discovery Sciences (DS) organization in Janssen R&D, and is committed to the delivery of high quality chemical leads needed for the generation of small molecule clinical compounds in all five Janssen Therapeutic Area (TA) discovery teams. This mission requires deep scientific expertise in a number of disciplines including chemistry, molecular and cellular pharmacology, and screening technologies combined with an ability to work collaboratively with internal and external partners. Building on a strong legacy of success, we are currently seeking an outstanding individual to join our team as a Scientist in the Biochemistry platforms group located in Spring House, PA.

The candidate will contribute to mass spectrometry-based screening strategy, including affinity selection, HTMS functional screening, as well as intact LC-MS, for identification and characterization small-molecule modulators to support hit to lead programs from multiple therapeutic areas. With minimal supervision, the candidate will be responsible for development of MS-based assays, screen execution, data analysis, and presenting data to the team. In addition, the candidate will be expected to collaborate with assay scientists on development of biochemical HTS assays, perform direct binding and MOA studies on validated hits, work with senior members to evaluate and implement new capabilities at DTMP.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree with at least 6 or more years of industry experience in biochemistry, biophysics, pharmacology or related field is required
  • OR
  • PhD with relevant drug development experience in an academic or industry setting is required.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry (LC/MSn, RapidFire MS or MALDI) and its application to early, target-based drug discovery is required.
  • Breadth of experience in biochemistry activities in drug discovery including affinity-based mass spectrometry, high-throughput biochemical assay development, characterization of drug mechanism-of-action and analysis of SAR is required
  • Experience in use of Chemstation, Xcalibur, Spotfire, and GraphPad Prism is preferred. 
  • Experience in scientific programming (Python) is preferred.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following therapeutic areas: Oncology, Immunology, Neuroscience, Cardiovascular, and Infectious Diseases is preferred
  • Strong interpersonal, collaboration, and teamworking skills is required.

The Scientist, Analytical Chemistry will be responsible for:

  • Together with other members of the group, evaluate and implement new liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) methods and innovative ways to apply mass spectral technology across different modalities and/or capabilities, such as small molecule drug discovery, peptide drug discovery and Direct-to-biology .
  • Work with the vendor, when necessary, to maintain and repair spectrometers.
  • Communicate results of mass spectral studies to project teams.
  • Present results at internal meetings and at external scientific meetings as appropriate.
  • Routinely interact with scientists from therapeutic area project teams and core technology groups to develop and implement strategies to help advance programs.
  • Evaluate the scientific literature critically and adopt novel technologies which will facilitate drug discovery projects.

Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. is required, in chemistry or related discipline.

          Or

  • Currently in a PhD program with an anticipated graduation / completed degree by Summer, 2021.
  • A minimum of 3 years of use of routine and advanced mass spectral methods to characterize synthetic medicinal compounds (small molecule) for structure and purity determination, is required. 
  • Proven track record in mass spectrometry, such as presentations at major conferences and/or publications on peer-reviewed journals, is required.
  • The ideal candidate will have extensive hands-on experience with qualitative LC/MS including new method development and high-resolution MS techniques is preferred.
  • LC/MS experience supporting synthetic/medicinal chemistry is preferred.
  • Experience with high throughput mass spectrometry and peptide discovery is preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of Waters and Agilent mass spectrometer including maintenance, troubleshooting, and automation, is preferred.
  • Hands on experience with LC/MS methods for characterization of medicinal compounds including open access analytical lab management and operation, configuration and maintenance of Agilent and Waters LC/MS systems is preferred.
  • Strong background in synthetic organic chemistry is preferred.
  • Experience with software platforms including ChemStation, MassHunter Walk-up, and MassLynx is preferred.

Responsibilities

Bruker Daltonics is searching for a seasoned Field Sales Representative to support Life Sciences Mass Spectrometry sales in the Pharmaceutical and Biopharmaceutical industry in the Mid-Atlantic Region.  This position will be located in the Philadelphia, PA or Baltimore, MD area.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Meets or exceeds assigned territory sales target by maintaining & growing sales in current accounts, and identifying & closing business in new accounts.
  • Accurately forecasts prospects through the sales cycle.  Maintains balance & list of prospects that reflects sales targets.  Interprets customer needs & identify BDAL solutions.  Builds & articulates BDAL value proposition.  Understands customer decision making process, and key decision makers & influencers.
  • Cultivates key accounts.
  • Provides sales territory information, forecasts, reports and other business data through the BDAL management structure.
  • Completes a business plan for the assigned territory detailing specific strategies and activities required to achieve goals.
  • Identifies & works with internal resources to enhance customer interaction through sales process.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Maintains & enhances sales skills through technical & sales training.
  • Develops & maintains territory database.
  • Maintains & enhances technical knowledge on BDAL products, company literature & information, and competition.
  • Maintains knowledge to discuss commercial contract terms.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience:   

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry/biochemistry or equivalent scientific degree.
  • Minimum of five years’ sales experience in related industry, with demonstrated success, required.

Computer Skills:

  • Essential to have experience with contact management database software, and MS Office.  Must be able to learn new software packages; e.g. Adobe Acrobat.
  • It is desirable to have experience in Bruker software.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Must have & be able to maintain valid travel documentation.

Other Skills and Abilities:                                           

  • Excellent communications skills needed to work with a wide variety of knowledge levels with customers of differing backgrounds, and within BDAL (e.g. management, service applications).
  • Excellent presentation, interpersonal, and organization skills.
  • Ability to decide priorities in a rapidly changing commercial environment.

Other Qualifications:                                                   

  • Must be able to maintain home office with telephone lines and computer connectivity.  Must have flexibility, ability to prioritize and manage differing time constraints: time management is essential. 
  • In depth Pharmaceutical and Biopharmaceutical industry knowledge.
  • Self-motivation is essential as is a willingness to work with others toward a shared goal.
  • Willingness and ability to travel as extensive travel is required.
